THE GRAND
“WOMEN LOVE DIAMONDS” A poignant drama, set in surroundings that spell joy, revelry and the , pleasure of the idle rich —this is the paradox in “Women Love Diamonds, ’’ the remarkable new showing at the Grand Theatre. Pauline Starke scores a triumph in the new picture, in the role of a girl facing the most terrible problem that ever fell to the lot of a woman. Its emotional possibilities make her role outstanding, and her handling of it is artistry personified. Owen Moore plays the hero, injecting his whimsical humour and human understanding into a difficult acting part as the chauffeur-lover in a strange tangle of human destinies. Douglas Fairbanks, jun., and Lionel Barrymore are two other bright spots in the constellation of celebrities in the new picture. Cissy Fitzgerald as the mother, and Gwen Lee as the fashionable daughter, have remarkably fine roles, which they handle with rare skill, and George Cooper has an important part. The settings and costumes are gorgeous—portraying the spirit of the drama of effervescent society. Edmund Goulding, the author, personally directed the picture.
