Scrimgeour’s investigations among the unemployed as one of them, he has been inundated with letters and telephone messages. Among the offers to find work for the unemployed Mr. Scrimgeour, who is a city missioner, has found that there are some people who are deliberately taking advantage of the position to get work done cheaply. One such request came from the country. A farmer said that he required a strong man to work on lxis farm and that the man must be able to plough and to do heavy work. The sum of 10s a week was offered to the successful applicant. Several men. said that the farmers are exploiting the unemployment situation. There were others who offered to relieve unemployment by paying a similar wage. Fortunately Mr. Scrimgeour has been able to place about a dozen men in good billets. One has gone as far as Ngatea to drive a motor-van for a storekeeper there. Several farmers have also taken men and a number of others have received steady work in the city. Air. Scrimgeour has received many visitors, all interested in his investigations as one of the unemployed. It will be remembered that with a companion he spent three days and two nights living as an “out-of-work"
