OHURA COUNTY COUNCIL

WORKS AHEAD Mr. W. S. Currie, presided over the monthly meeting of the Ohura County Council, with a full board of councillors present. In reply to representations made by the council, the Minister of Public Works advised that his department was calling tenders for the erection of trucking yards at Niho Niho Railway Station; and that with regard to the Ohura Station, the district engineer stated that he could not have the formation ready for the stockyards until the end of October, so that the yards would not be ready for use before about the end of next December. The district engineer wrote to the effect that after investigations it appeared to him that it would be necessary to erect a permanent bridge at the site of the present Waipu Suspension Bridge, and inquired what the council was prepared to contribute toward the cost. The council had previously agreed to find the £3OO toward the cost of erecting a permanent bridge, and on the motion of Councillors Sandison and Denison, it was decided to comfirm this agreement, the amount to be charged against the Niho Niho Riding. On the motion of Crs. Fullerton-Smith and Jebb, it was resolved to draw up plans for the purpose of constituting a special drainage area in the township of Matiere. The clerk was instructed to draw’ up a petition, to be signed by interested ratepayers, the rate to be struck being Is. in the £ on the capital value. On the motion of Crs. Robinson and Romayne it was decided to apply to the Department of Agriculture to have the county ranger appointed a noxious w'eeds inspector, the cost to be mutually shared by the council and the department. It was agreed to prosecute further inquiries as to the possibility of procuring electric current from the Wairere Power Board. Rates for the current year were struck as follows:—Otangiwai Riding, 2§d., all other ridings, 2£d.
