TROTTING CLUBS AS EMPLOYERS
ris quite evident that apart from providing the public with a good deal of recreation and enjoyment, the Auckland and Otahuhu Trotting Clubs provide quite a good deal of employment in a general way. Last year the two light-harness organisations paid out in wages and salaries the sum of £5,396 10s, which was distributed among secretaries, caretakers, assistants, handicappers, clerks, gatemen and officials of various descriptions. The Auckland Club disbursed in wages to gate and course officials for seven days’ racing £1,197 10s, while for four days’ sport the Otahuhu Club expended £731 10s. Auckland paid in wages for Alexandra Park £675, and Otahuhu’s lawn and course expenses amounted to £482. Salaries totalled respectively £1,609 and £7OO. These figures show that the trotting clubs employ a good deal of labour in connection with the management of the sport, and thus serve a very useful and appreciable purpose.
