FIFTH ANNUAL BALL The fifth annual staff ball of the Public Works Department at Pukehuia was held in the Settler's Hall. The music and catering were of the usual high standard, and the decorations of a novel design which reflected credit on the committee. Streamers of lycopodium and paper roses were festooned across the hall, which, together with the gay lighting made an altogether delightful effect. The duties of M.C.’s were capably carried out by Messrs. Marshall, Jamieson and Rogers, and the music, which was of a very high uorder, was supplied by Dobson’s Orchestra. The night was delightfully fine, and a number of car loads of visitors from Dargaville and Whangarei were able to make the trip. Among those present were: Mrs. Gibson, early Victorian frock in rose pink broche taffeta. Mrs. B. Gould, delph shot taffeta frock. Mrs. R. Keene, pale pink georgette, with sequin and bead design. Mrs. J. R. Cameron, shot mauve taffeta and silver lace. Mrs. Broomfield, cream crepe de chine and georgette, with silver motifs. Miss Wayte, powder blue taffeta with bands of multi-coloured ribbons. Miss L. Woolley, black velvet frock with Oriental trimming. Miss McEwan, white crepe de chine, with silver trimming. Miss Ridsdale, frock of rose pink tinsel. Miss Smith, ivory georgette frock. Mrs. B. Davidson, plum coloured frock of georgette. Mrs. Gould, hyacinth blue frock of taffeta. Miss Biddles, black georgette and silver trimming. Miss U. Gould, apple green georgette frock. Miss Coleman, frock of persimmon brocaded georgette. Miss Massey, blue crepe de chine and silver lace. Miss McGill, black georgette and wallflower trimming. Mrs. Boyes, blue and silver taffeta. Miss M. Harding, moonlight blue brocaded georgette. Mrs. Wreakes, buttercup yellow and blue georgette frock. Mrs. Delich, blue georgette with handpainted motifs on contrasting hem. Miss U. Coster, frock of rose crepe de chine. , , , . Miss A. Coster, cerise crepe de chine frock. Mrs. G. Sullivan, navy blue georgette over satin. , . , Miss E. Boler, cherry velvet trimmed with white fur cream evening shawl. Mrs. B. McGaughey, apricot georgette trimmed with silver beads and lace. PLUNKET SOCIETY N.Z. DIRECTOR VISITS WHANGAREI This week Whangarei has had a visit from Miss Pattrick, who met the local committee of the Plunket Society at the Borough Council Chambers on Tuesday afternoon. Miss Pattrick gave a very interesting address on the work being done throughout New Zealand, and expressed great pleasure at the progress made in the Whangarei district, remarking that the figures in the office showed a steady increase. After the meeting all present adjourned to the new Plunket rooms in Central Park. Miss Pattrick was delighted with the building and its beautiful surroundings, and congratulated the president and committee on having made such a progressive step. She remarked that the Whangarei branch was indeed fortunate in having a borough council and hospital board so fully alive to the value of the work done by the Plunket Society. TAKANINI PUBLIC SCHOOL ANNUAL FANCY DRESS BALL The event of the year, in so far as the school children of Takanini are concerned, was held in the Public Hall, Takanini, last evening, the hall being crowded with children and their parents and friends. , The hall was prettily decorated with a large Japanese lantern, suspended from the centre of the room, and multicoloured streamers twining in all directions presented a very gay spectacle. The proceeds will benefit the public school library to a great extent. Much praise for the success of the function is due to Mrs. L. J. Haughey, who was ably assisted by Miss Carey. Mr. Haughey supplied the music.
