“LITTLE PILLAGING IN N.Z. PORTS”
CHRISTCHURCH OPINIONS (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. That there is very little pillaging from cargoes coming to New Zealand, compared with the quantity and value of shipments, was the unanimous opinion of city importers, shipping firms, and Government officials interviewed by a SUN reporter. The general opinion was that most of the pillaging took place in the London docks, at Home ports, and during the voyage. Although there were cases of pilliging at New Zealand ports, the claims clerk for one big shipping company said that the figures for his company, on a comparative basis, were nowhere near the percentage indicated in the cable news. His opinion was that little pillaging was done in New Zealand, most cases being what were called “original thefts,” which meant thefts in England. An official in the Customs examination sheds stated: “The figures seem all out of proportion to me: they have been exaggerated.”
