LATE TURF
GMCRACK STAKES BLACK WATCH SCORES PUNKA’S PROMISING SON By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 11.30 a.m. LONDON, Thursday. On the third and concluding day of the York meeting to-day the two-year-old classic resulted as follows: GIMCRACK STAKES Of 1,400 sovs; 6 furlongs. BLACK WATCH (J. B. Reid), b c, by Black Gauntlet—Punka (N.Z.) .. 1 CELANDINE 2 .THREE STAR 3 Fourteen started. Won by a neck. Black Watch was got by Black Gauntlet from Punka, who was taken to England by the Canterbury sportsman, Mr. J. B. Reid, the mare being served to English time. Punka was a good performer in this country, among her notable successes being the C.J.C. Great Autumn Handicap over eight years ago as a three-year-old. Prior to this she- won the N.Z. Oaks at Riccarton. Punka, who was got by the Australian horse Cooltrim, has therefore some claim to stamina. Black Watch has now won three races this season, and his latest over six furlongs yesterday will serve to enhance his prospects in next year's big classics. Incidentally, the six furlongs course at York is “straight, and of great width,” to quote the official description. The continued success of Mr. Reid’s colt will be looked forward to with considerable interest by Dominion sportsmen. In the past Mr. Reid's colours, scarlet, white cap, were carried with distinction in this country by such good horses as Skirmisher, Gladsome, Kilboy, Spider, Angelina, Ogier, Rinaldo, Charmilla. Mowbray and Kilflinn.
