AIRSHIP EXPERTS
ON WAY TO DOMINION By Cable. —Press Association. —Copyright SYDNEY, Thursday. The Director of Airship Development in the Air Ministry, Group-Cap-tain P. F. M. Fellowes, Flight-Lieu-tenant Nixon, and Mr. M. A. Giblett, the superintendent of the airship section of the British Meteorological Office, who comprise a special mission from the Air Ministry to investigate conditions in Australia and New Zealand, • ill leave for New Zealand to-day. They will continue their investigations regarding the proposed Imperial air service.—A. and N.Z.
Captain Fellowes explained in Sydney that the underlying idea of the proposed airship flight was to pioneer a means of bringing the distant parts of the Empire together. “Speed in the delivery of mails is entirely dependent on the future of the airship,” he said. “At present the Air Ministry is building two giant airships for these contemplated services. Each will have a capacity of 5,000,000 cubic feet, and will be able to carry 100 passengers and 10 tons of mail. “Some idea of the size of these monsters may be gained from the fact that the Norge, the airship which recently made a Polar flight, is only equal in size to one of the gas-bags which these airships will employ. And each airship will contain 16 gas-bags of this size!”
