Lost the Chance of a Lifetime

SCULLER’S CRUEL LUCK The sensation of Henley Royal Regatta, England, this year was the defeat of Joe Wright in the final of the Diamonds. As he approached the judges’ box, leading by quite four lengths, it looked as if only a catastrophe could deprive him of the proud title of world’s amateur champion sculler. And the catastrophe happened ! The Canadian sculler was half-way along the last boom of the course, with the race well in hand, when his left scull got jammed after he had fouled the boom. Had he been able to get it clear promptly a couple of strokes would have carried him to victory, but he failed to do so, and R. T. Lee, of Worcester College, the runner-up in the Oxford University sculls, was able to make up his leeway and pass the finishing post a length ahead. Wright was simply heart-broken at having failed to achieve his greatest ambition.
