PUT DIRT IN MILK
TAKAPUNA PRANK COSTS OLD MAN £lO DEFENCE DISBELIEVED Robert John Hill, an old and well-known Takapuna resident, was fined £lO in the Police Court to-day for being found by night without lawful excuse at 24 Bayview Road, Takapuna. The police evidence was that the owner of the house had for a number of mornings found quantities of dirt in the milk delivered to his home.# He kept watch one night and caught defendant tampering with his jug. “A RESPECTED MAN” Mr. J. F. W. Dickson, who appeared for Hill, said he was one of the most respected men in Auckland. He was subject to neurasthenic storms and often could not remember what lie had said. This accounted for his statements to the police. The defendant, in evidence, said he was interested in ' a milk round at Takapuna, and suspecting that one of his men might not deliver milk to all the customers, he set watch early one morning, and had gone to the houses to see if the milk had been left. The house at 24 Bay view Road was not on his round list. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, said he did not believe the defence, and inflicted a fine of £lO. “I would not send an old man to gaol,” he said. On Mr. Dickson’s application security for appeal was fixed at £lO 10s.
