PROVINCIAL HOCKEY

WAIPA V KING COUNTRY (From Our Own Correspondent.) TE AWAMUTU, Wednesday. The rei?resentative hockey match between the reps, of King Country and Waipa girls took place at Te Awamutu on Wednesday afternoon. The weather could not have been worse and the ground was not in a fit state for hockey. The players were wet to the skin and the manner in which they floundered about in the mud and slush was the cause of some amusement.. The visitors showed better combination than the local team, and eventually won by four goals to nil. Early in the game Miss K. Carlson came through and got a shot past Mrs. Miller, opening the score for King Country. King Country continued to press, but Miss McCready led an attack and sent a good shot to the net, which was smartly turned aside by the goalie. The Waipa custodian, Mrs. Millar, had a particularly busy time and saved repeatedly. The King Country forward line combined better than their opponents and did remarkably well under the unfavourable conditions. The second half was similar to the first, King Country predominating. The Waipa players seemed unable to keep their feet in the soft going. Goals were scored by Miss M. Woodmass (2), and Miss L. Turton (1). Mr. A. Finch had charge of the game. MEN'S MATCHES At the conclusion of the ladies’ match the men took tl\e field, playing on the same ground as that vacated by the ladies. Thg visitors were without the services of three of their original team, the local players filling the gaps. Waipa led the attack, but were repulsed and had to conceed a corner. King Country still pressed and Patrick, with a good shot, beat Bouglas. Waipa forwards combined well and H. Andrew beat the defence and found the net, making the scores even. The remainder of the spell saw honours evenly divided. For the greater part of the second half play was carried on in a heavy downpour and the game was not taken too seriously, as good hockey was impossible under such adverse conditions. G. Finch was conspicuous and he narrowly missed the net on more than one occasion. H. Andrew cam 3 through and Finch had another shot, which got past Bouglas. King Country were not to be denied and at length got to Waipa’s circle, and Fanthorpe found the net. The remainder of the play was uninteresting and at times developed into a scramble. The game ended: King Country 2, Waipa 2. Mr. A. Finch had charge of the game. _______________________
