FRENCH CYCLE CLASSIC The entries for the French Le Premier Pas Dunlop road race this year reached the huge total of 12,000, which were divided into 87 groups. No other cycle race in the world has ever reached such dimensions as this event. One thousand officials were conveyed in 1,000 motor-cars, and supervised the big I event. Fifty thousand booklets dealing with the prizes, conditions of the race, and directions of the course were dis- j tributed throughout France and Northern Africa. Something like 250,000 , entry forms and other particulars of the race, 100,000 poster programmes setting out the list of preliminary trials conducted under the auspices of the governing body—the French Cycling Union—were issued. About 15,000 feed bags were used, and 5,000 people assisted to distribute printing material and feeding. On May 22 this year the grand final was limited to 60 of the cream of France’s young wheelmen. The winner proved to be Auguste Goupil, who covered the journey 60 kilometres (37 miles 500yds) in lh 51m 7 3-ss. his average speed being 21J miles an hour.
