HAWERA CLUB
SATISFACTORY YEAR BURDEN OF TAXATION ARRANGEMENT FOR COURSE THE Hawera Trotting Club, which receives a good measure of support for its Easter fixture from owners and trainers in the Auckland Province, had a satisfactory year, as is shown in the appended report, which is to be presented at the annual meeting of members. One of the progressive movements made by the Hawera Club was the installation of a Reynolds starting barrier, and other clubs similarly situated could with advantage follow this wise lead. After writing off the sum of £3O 14s 6d, the profit and loss account shows a credit balance of £214 5s Id. This may be considered a very satisfactory return, as, in common with most other clubs, the totalisator investments this year showed a general decline. SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE From a trotting standpoint, however, the meeting was the most successful yet held by the club, the attendance being large, while the splendid support accorded the club by owners and trainers was very gratifying and promises well for the future. The committee this year installed the Reynolds patent starting barrier, one of the most efficient systems in use, and the Innovation was much appreciated by drivers and the public generally. THE PROPER SPIRIT During the year an agreement was entered into with the Egmont Racing Club, by which the club will hold trotting meetings for a term of years on the Egmont course, under conditions which are considered satisfactory. The committee expresses its thanks to the Egmont Racing Club for many courtesies extended to the Trotting Club in connection with the use of the Egmont course and appointments for the Easter meeting. THE LION’S SHARE Trotting clubs, in common with racing organisations, are at present finding increasing difficulty in meeting the heavy taxation imposed upon them, and a Bill will shortly be brought before Parliament which, if carried, will afford clubs some measure of relief. The Government taxes paid by this club for the year amounted to £2,958 7s Bd. The committee expresses its thanks to the honorary and paid officials for services rendered during the year. COMPETITION FOR OFFICE Nominations for the offices of president, vice-president and hon. treasurer, not being in excess of the vacancies to be filled, no election will be necessary. For offices of committee and stewards, nominations in excess of the number required having been received, an election will take place at the annual general meeting.
