Vexed Question of Dividends

Another Sydney Scheme A Sydney sportsman has submitted to the Australian Jockey Club authorities a scheme for the allocation of totalisator dividends which he considers would immensely popularise the machine. There would be many more dividends, and he figures that though the prizes would be smaller, their number would increase the de.sire to bet on the totalisator. The idea is to pay dividends to one-third of the starters in proportion as they finish. Say there are 15 starters, and that there remains, after taking out the charges, £1,500 to be divided. As 5 plus 4 plus 3 plus 2 plus 1 equal 15, so there are deemed to be 15 £IOO quotas; and the ticket holders concerned shall be paid upon the quota distribution, calculated as follows; Those upon the— First placed horse divide 5 x 100.. £SOO Second placed horse divide 4 x 100 £4OO Third placed horse divide 3 x 100 £3OO Fourth placed horse divide 2 x 100 £2OO Fifth placed horse divide 1 x 100 £IOO £1,500 ith a field of— Two to three starters, first tickets divide. Four to six starters, first and second divide. Seven to nine starters, first, second, and third divide. Ten to 12 starters, first to fourth divide. Thirteen to 15 starters, first to fifth divide. And so forth. Thus, with a field of 28 to 30 starters, first to tenth tickets divide.
