The Banker For Melbourne Cup
The chief item of interest in connection with the Spring handicaps during the last two or three days has been the continued support accorded to The Banker for the Melbourne Cup. It can be taken for granted that the Melbourne Cup is The Banker's chief mission this spring. He may, of course, first of all tackle the Caulfield Cup. He did so last year, and ran second to Manfred. It is possible, of course, that Don Moon (winner of the three-year-old event at Sydney last Saturday), may be Mr. Otway Falkiner’s representative in the Caulfield race, but that is not likely to be decided until nearer the day. Commendation and Silvius were the horses coupled with The Banker, and the amount taken was considerable. The Banker looks very bright, and providing the tracks do not get too hard, he should be a very fit horse by the
time the Melbourne Cup comes round. H. Cairns will ride him this year in the Melbourne Cup, and as he is also to ride Comemndation in the Caulfield Cup, he appears to have an excellent chance of winning the double. Last year he rode The Banker at Caulfield, and won the Melbourne Cup on Spearfelt. Reports from Sydney are reassuring in regards to the slight, accident Commendation had on landing from the boat, and he is now said to be quite all right. Gothic was scratched for the Caulfield Cup early in the week, but as he has been backed for the Epsom .Handicap, his withdrawal was not unexpected. There is little else doing, but it is satisfactory to be able to say that most of the favoured candidates are at present going along in good style, although a message from Sydney mentions that all is not well with Bicolor.
