LOCAL BODIES CONFER ON NATIVE RATES

SEEKING A SOLUTION MEETING AT TE KUITI (From Our Own Correspondent.) TE KUITI, To-day. A representative gathering of delegates of local bodies from all over the North Island is being held here today at the invitation of the Te Kuiti Chamber of Commerce and the Te Kuiti Borough Council, to try and find a solution on the native land question and the collection of rates from native lands. Mr. Judge Mac Cormack, a representative of the Native Department, and many leading natives are present. . 3 The Mayor, Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, in welcoming the delegates, expressed a hope that some solution to the burning question now before the conference would be found and that the natives would be able to reap some benefit from this, at present, unproductive land. As the law stands at present it was impossible to collect rates from native lands, and it was to be hoped that the conference would be fortunate enough to find a solution which would be favourable to the natives and the local bodies concerned. The conference is proceeding.
