POLICE SERGEANT’S CHARGE OF PERJURY
NEW TRIAL TO-DAY Press Association. INVERCARGUjL, "Wednesday. A charge of perjury was preferred in the Supreme Court to-day against George Scandrett, formerly seniorsergeant of police at Invercargill. It was alleged that on January 28, during the course of a case in which Annie Scandrett proceeded against Patrick Cairns for moneys lent, accused denied having any share in a gold mining claim held by Cairns prior to December, 1925. Mr. Hanlon, for accused, said the statement was absolutely correct. Accused's wife had put money into claims and accused had gradually taken up the reins, as any man might do for his wife The jury, after a retirement of four hours, failed to agree. A new trial was ordered for tomorrow.
