Downie Stewart, the Minister of Finance, today by a deputation representative of the pig-breeders of the North Island. Mr J G. Cobb, chairman of the Cooperative Pig Marketing Association, pointed out that there was a splendid opening for New Zealand pork on the Home market, and that, in order to compete successfully with other countries. cheap feed for pigs is essential. Maize, barley and pollard would have to be imported in large quantities from Australia if the pig industry was to make progress. .... The Minister replied that the question had been given serious considera. tion by the Tariff Commission, but they would have to wait until the report was presented .to Parliament to see what recommendations had beermade There would then be ample opportunity for making any further representations.
