NEWMARKET APPROVES NEW TRAM FARES

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS General approval was expressed by the Newmarket Borough Council last evening of the new policy of the Auckland City Council regarding the suggested revision of tram fares and sections. Doubts were expressed as to the council’s rights under the present deed of delegation. It was decided to approve the proposals, provided the present rights of Newmarket were adequately protected. The report and balance sheet presented by the Newmarket Volunteer Fire Brigade showed a marked financial improvement. The unsatisfactory accommodation provided for the men was mentioned. The inadequate fire alarm system was also criticised. The invitation of the Mayor of Mount Eden, Mr. E. H. Potter, to attend a conference of local bodies for the consideration of the recent proposals for the revision of local government, to be held next Wednesday, was accepted. The Streets Committee is to consider an offer of £75, to be subsidised £ for £ by the council and expended in works for the relief of unemployment, which was received from the Auckland Returned Soldiers’ Association.
