DEVONPORT BOROUGH

PROJECTED WORKS The meeting of Devonport Boro.ugh Council last evening was attended by Messrs. Aldridge (Mayor), Hislop, Browne, Massey, Enright, W. S. Campbell, I. Lyons, F. J. H. Ellisdon, F. J. Sheehan and H. A. Campbell. Now that the automatic fire alarm system has been installed it is intended that a deputation wait op the Fire Underwriters’ Association to urge a reduction in insurance premiums charged in Devonport. The engineer is to* draft a plan to bring the borough under the Town Planning Act. Out of the unemployment loans of £ 32,000 raised last year a surn of £5,500 remains to complete Queen’s Parade reclamation, Lake Road alterations and Narrow Neck Beach wall, for which 50 per cent, of piling has been made. A proposal to abandon work at Narrow Neck was classed by Mr. Sheehan as contemplating “a jerry job.” Cr. Hislop suggested spending £SOO out of overdraft and when a loan was raised for footpaths the amount could be included. The engineer is to report on the cost of finishing the wall in order that the money available be saved for finishing Queen’s Parade wrall and tVie roading to be made to meet the new passenger wharf. It is expected that in a few' weeks the Harbour Board will be ready to commence pumping material behind the wall. The Takapuna Jockey Club is to be invited to help in draining Vauxhall Reserve, which is adjacent to ;he club’s course. Furhter inquiries are to be made concerning a proposal by the Boy Scouts to be allowed to erect a hall on Mount Victoria. The council considered the refusal of a building permit for a factory in what will be a residential area under the Town-Planning Act, but found it had not power to do so. In granting permission to the Unemployed Association to takd up a street collection, the Mayor said he had a scheme of his own, but would drop it for the collection..
