DICKENS, THE JOURNALIST
“Dickens As Journalist” was the subject of a paper read by Mr. W. D. Lusty at a meeting of the Auckland branch of the Dickens’ Fellowship last evening. Mr. Lusty gave an account of the author’s newspaper careei*. His paper was followed by a series <p£ readings*
Appreciation of Services. —A letter expressing appreciation of the readymanner in which it responded to the false message regarding an accident on Rangitoto last Friday, has been received by the St. John Ambulance from the Prisons Department. Light for Coromandel Hospital.— The Coromandel Hospital Board is still considering the installation of a hydroelectric lighting plant. The last meeting derided to delay no longer awaiting advice from the Department of Ilealth, and to set up a committee to go fully into the question and report.
Galley Fire on Moeraki. —Slight damage by fire and water was done to the galley of the steamer Moeraki at Wellington yesterday. Dense' clouds of smoke issued from the ship, but after a few minutes the brigade subdued the outbreak, the origin of which is not known. —Press Association. Mamari to Resume Voyage. —The steamer Mamari, which was damaged recently in a collision with an iceberg, leaves Bahia Blanca for London on August 30. According to advices received in Welllington to-day, she suffered no under-water damage abaft the fisUisiCß buliiliead.—Pi%ss -Association.
