AVONDALE GETS COMMUNITY CARS
EXTENSION OF SERVICES “KOHIMARAMA NEXT WEEK” Avondale is now served by the community cars” of the General Transit Club and next week it is proposed to extend the activities to Kohimarama and St. Heliers. W ITH lts 27 cars and a membership °f over 1,000, says the president, Mr. Harold Schmidt, the club is a substantial denial to the allegation that it is '’mythical.” On the Avondale route three cars »!« ru T lnin S now, the drivers being men who were previously employed by -wi «« G fi nei S? Omnibus Company, r'r? o n i the Cl .. ty Council took over the (-x.O.C. buses,” said Mr. Schmidt this morning, “these three men were dismissed but they immediately got cars, r,?° k taxi licences and joined the J rtinsit Club. Now they are running a service to Blockhouse Bay, Avondale and New Lynn. I \ Petition had been received by the club from Kohimarama and it was proposed to start a service of taxis there next week. All the activities "■ere made possible by the highness or the tram fares. The cars were now running to Dominion Road, Mount L.den, New Lynn, Blockhouse Bay and Avondale. Dominion Road was by far the best paying service, due, Mr. Schmidt thought, to the fact that the people on that route were “quicker in intellect.” In some parts of the day a two-muinte service was kept up there. Parnell was tried by the club, but it was found that, for some unknown reason, the residents did not patronise the service, so it was discontinued.
