THE DREAMER

MacManus sits alone, alone. His grey house is a house of tears And tired shadows and half-fears And whispering winds. The pine trees sway And the sea moans. And the red day Dies with a half Sob at his doer. He sits alone. He hath the sorrowing, they say. His soul is a white flame that cries In lonely places. And his eyes Are pools of wonder. He doth sing, Poor poet, in his sorrowing: Nor stars, nor winds, can comfort bring. He sings alone. The black pot burnetii on the coals. The firelight red glows in his eyes, Spilled pools of flame. The night wind sighs. He watches by the pot, and all About him he soft shadows fall. The shadows deepen. Ho Wind sighs. He hath the peace. —Flora Sandstrom.
