BRITAIN AND U.S.A.

With the 1928 Olympic Games drawing: nearer and nearer, speculation is rife as to the prospects of the various countries competing - . Next year sees the admission for the first time since the war of Germany, and her forces are bound to influence the results. Both the English and American amateur athletic championships were held last month, and they form a guide to the chancres of those countries at the games. The following is a comparison of the times registered at these meetings:

From the above table it will be seen that England leads in only two branches, the 440yds flat and the mile. However, she runs America very close in the 220yds, 880yds and 120yds hurdles. All things considered, British prospects appear to be brighter than before the last games. Oxford and Cambridge inflicted an unexpected defeat on Yale and Harvard Universities at Stamford Bridge recently, thus showing that Americans are not always up to American form on foreign soil. Although England has no sprinter of very great merit, the performances of such men as D. G. A. Lowe (middle distance) and Lord Burghlfey (hurdles) will be watched with more than ordinary interest.
