TROTTING...

NOTES AND COMMENTS

PROVINCIAL TOPICS EARLY PREPARATION In view of the October and November fixtures at Alexandra Park owners in various parts of the province arc beginning to show signs of activity and horses that have been ejoying a holiday are being taken up and indulged in light exercise preparatory to undertaking the more serious duties in the near future. Otahuhu Members to Meet The annual meeting of members of the Otahuhu Trotting Club is to be held next Friday, at 3 p.m., at the club’s offices. Acacia Buildings. A Useful Quartette The Wellsfoi’d owner-trainer G. A. Williams has been spelling his useful quartette, Gold Dial, Bell Dial, Nellie Bramley and the trotter Ngatira, but they will soon be stepping along again in view of the approaching Auckland and district fixtures. Placed suitably the Wellsford team can be depended upon to pick up a reasonable amount of stake money.

Taupiri Candidates R. C. Wood is getting active again with Rock Hinton and Sean Triubhais, and Mr. Charles’s pair will be on deck again for spring engagements. Rock Hinton was successful at the country fixtures last season, and may be seen to advantage in more pretentious company this year. Sean Triubhais is a trotter with good possibilities and will probably be among the early winners. Could If She Would Roma Bingen is back at toil again, and the disappointing square-gaited daughter of Nelson Bingen looks bright after the spell. If H. Kinnimint can induce the mare to go right he will not be long in raking in the dollars, as Roma has plenty of pace. The aged gelding, Normica Heir, who has been off the scene for some time now, has signed on with the Royal Oak trainer. Preference for the Goldfield J. Aitkenhead has given the trotting mare, Mollie Park, a good rest since her unsuccessful outing at Cambridge, where she failed to show anything approaching her form at the Thames fixture. The daughter of Ripon Child —Lady Park appears to have a liking for the Thames track, and makes a point of doing her best when visiting the goldfields. Mollie’s owner has a Gold Bell maiden receiving its early education. and the novice is showing good promise. Enjoyed a Good Holiday . N. Cunningham’s pair of pacers, Golden Park and Single Mint have wintered well, and will be ready to receive further tuition when the tracks are suitable. The latter, who is a five-year-old mare by Florizel from Spearmint, sister to Wrigley, was showing promise toward the close of last season, and should be heard of when the provincial fixtures are in full swing. Missed from the Track No horse is more missed at Epsom of late than Master Councillor, who with his genial owner-trainer W. Evans was the most consistent attendant at the tracks. The son of Councillor—Holly Maid is being indulged in a well-earned holiday, and will return later on to the track as fresh as the proverbial daisy. The Master will form one of W. Clifton’s team when that mentor has finished his holiday also. Getting Busy Again Geo. Webb is kept busy with his team of trotters, and expects to have them in good shape for the forthcoming fixtures. Wild Nut is in great heart and promises to be well forward for the Auckland and Otahuhu functions. Wild Downs and Ohapi will concentrate on the country circuit, where thev will find events to suit their particular class. Will He Chime in October? Toll Chimes is standing up to his work in a manner that is decidedly encouraging to his owner-trainer, Fred Smith. The free-legged son of Jewel Chimes is revelling in his essays, and promises to be in good condition when the flags are unfurled at Alexandra Park. Last season Toll Chimes kicked off with the right leg, and won the first time up, returning his popular owner a handsome price. Finding the Game Hard R. Hall has the aged Gold Bell gelding Reliance pottering about waiting for a cheince to put in the necessary work to fit him for racing tasks ahead. The old chap is game enough for anything, but he is up against it with so many improving young pacers coming on the scene and making the task of earning a stake more difficult. Stanmoor, who won a few races for trainer Hall last year, is at present under the supervision of his owner.

Can He Reproduce It? Rockburn is still under the charge of R. A. McMillan, the Tamahere trainer, who will have a fair number of pacers and trotters to attend to this season. Rockburn was not seen to advantage during the past season, and failed to reproduce his pleasing form of the previous year. Like many more in the game, he is not getting any younger, but when he strikes his real form there is no reason why the Rock Huon gelding should not win another stake or two for his Epsom owner, Mr. D. Brideson.
