WOMAN MARTYR OF CHINESE MISSION

AUCKLANDER’S DEATH Privations of the Chinese mission field have caused the death of Miss Nellie Mac Duff, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. Mac Duff, of View Road, Mount Eden. Born at Thames 41 years ago, Miss Mac Duff was educated at Prince Albert College, Auckland. In 1914 she went to Melbourne to study the Chinese language, and having passed all her examinations with distinction in 12 months she went to Shanghai. In the provinces of Anjen and Antung she worked, experiencing great hardships in the famines of 1921 and 1922. After a lecture tour through New Zealand she returned to China in 1924, and was stationed at Hiangcheng, in the province of Honan. With the outbreak of the civil war Miss Mac Duff left for Shanghai with other refugees. In the two months’ journey she was robbed by bandits. She travelled in carts and wheelbarrows and on foot. An illness brought on by these privations caused her death at Shanghai.
