Boy in a Sewer. —A seven-year-old boy who fell into a New York sewer was carried one and a-half miles, and emerged safely, being rescued by the waiting police.—A. and N.Z. Cave Guide's Adventure. —At Chattanooga, Tennesse, Leonard Ashley, a cave guide, was imprisoned in tons of earth. He burrowed for two days with a shovel, encountering and driving off a wild cat before reaching the surface by an unknown opening.—A. and N.Z. New Zealander Dies Abroad. —Advice has been received in Gisborne of the death at Dundee of Donald Clements, a Gisborne hotelkeeper, who, with his wife, was making a tour of the Old Country. The deceased man was prominently associated with sport. Struck By Winch. —David McDonald, of 19 Liverpool Street, a. married man, aged 49, and employed by the Auckland Harbour Board as a scow hand, received injuries to his abdomen and chest through being struck by a winch to-day. His condition is satisfactory. Reed. 11.25 a.rn. WASHINGTON, Mon. Government is taking steps to ensure the safety of fliers in the future, by imposing strict rules regarding the fitness of motors, planes and radios. The death-.roll of ocean flights for the year totals nine, exclusive of the missing Dole fliers. —A. and N.Z. Stranded Steamer Riverina. The position of the stranded Riverina is improving daily. It is expected that on on next week’s high tides she will be refloated. Since the beginning of operations, the ship has moved 31 degrees seaward. She is now resting on an even keel, with deep water fore and aft, and a sandbank amidships. The latter is rapidly diminishing.—A. and N.Z.
