prisoner makes good fined for punching a POLICEMAN A woman has brought about the reformation of William Preston, aged 40, a prisoner on probationary licence, whose record during the past four years has been satisfact#Hii's fall yeeterday was due to drinkPreston pleaded guilty at the Police Court to-day to drunkenness, refusing to leave licenced premises when called upon, assaulting a constable, using obscene language, and failing to comply with the terms of his release on probation. He pleaded guilty to all charges, except that of using obscene language. HE WANTED MORE Constable 1.. Packman said he was in a city hotel last night when accused came in and demanded drink. The barman refused to serve him, because he was drunk, and witness told him to leave. Instead of doing so Preston struck him on the mouth. The language was used during a struggle in which witness handcuffed accused. WIFE’S GOOD INFLUENCE The probation officer said that Preston was released from prison four years ago. He had married a respectable woman, who had been a good influence upon him, and he had done well since his release. The magistrate. Mr. F. K. Hunt, said that he would give accused a chance. For assaulting the constable he was fined £5, in default 14 days’ imprisonment. For breach of probation he was ordered to come up for sentence any time within 12 months, and on the other charges he was convicted and discharged.
