CHILD’S FATAL BURNS

BROTHER’S PROMPT ACTION ' (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. Fatal burns were received by Monica Claire Oldfield, aged 5 years and 7 months, when playing in a bedroom of her father’s house at Broadfields, near Christchurch, yesterday morning, before an open fire. The child’s nightdress caught alight and her brother and sister tried to pull off the blazing garment. The brother, aged 11, then threw a blanket round the girl, but she was severely burned and died in the Christchurch Hospital yesterday afternoon. At a subsequent inquest the coroner commended the brother and sister on their prompt action. A verdict was returned that the child died from burns and shock accidentally received.
