ABOUT A DEPUTATION

Sir, — Out of Auckland’s tramway and bus chaos, the City Council has evolved an equitable and businesslike plan for putting the city’s transport system on a sound and payable basis, with the reservation of a six months’ trial, commencing on October 1. No sooner has this been adopted, than a deputation of shopkeepers waits on the council in objection, because they fear that a small percentage of trade will go further afield (which is doubtful), yet the occupiers of this business area decidedly vetoed the extentions loan one day and the next ask the City Council to subsidise their undertakings by lengthening the section, so that customers would be carried to their doors, quite disclaiming the broader issues involved. Should the length of the Pitt Street section be retained as at present, it will be an injustice to all other first section users, apart from the object the Tramway Committee had in view when it created the new scheme, namely, to equalise as far as possible the length of sections, and to give the greatest benefit to the greatest number of users. TRAMS.
