CLOSE GOING
CITY JUST GETS THERE It was a hard-fought tussle at Victoria Park when City met Athletic and won by 5 points to nil. For all that Athletic certainly had the better of the game. Both teams were playing with fourth and fifth grade men, and the game was not exactly senior standard. Watkins, McGregor and Lucas played excellent football, and their work in the front line was well worth watching. Repeatedly they broke away in a dashing passing rush, but failed to get through. They worried City more than the rest of the team. Both teams were handicapped by the heavy nature of the ground, and the ball was rather dead. Cunnold made a good impression, his nippy tackling and scrum work doing a lot to keep City on its way. Perry was probably the best man on the field. He brought off some great work. Whitehouse, Wade, Hamilton, Ghent, Spencer and Austin were also prominent. Had the game continued longer there is no doubt that Athletic would have crossed the line.
