ST. MICHAEL’S. REMUERA

OPENING OF MISSION Despite the inclemency of the weather, Sunday evening: saw St. Michael's Church, Remuera, filled by a large congregation, the occasion being the opening of the mission by the Rev. Father Goodmarf. “Catholic Faith” was the subject of the missioner's opening sermon. In an eloquent and inspiring address Father Goodman traced the progress of the faith from its early phases of martyrdom in the catacomb days to its pres-ent-day status. In conjunction with the mission, the choirmaster, Mr. Dufferin, has prepared specially-selected sacred works. The rendering of Steinforth’s “Mag-nificat-Benedetto,” by the choir, was a magnificent interpretation of this beautiful work. The mission will be continued throughout the week, being brought to a close with the “Forty-Hours” on Sunday next. HOME COMMANDMENTS There is a practical ring about these “ten commandments'’ issued by the Council of Infant and Child Welfare at Westminster (England) recently: Thou shalt honor thy neighbourhood and keep it clean. Remember thy cleaning-day, and keep it wholly. Thou shalt take care of thy rubbish heap, elst thy neighbour will bear witness against thee. Thou shalt keep in order thy alley, thy back-yard, thy hall and tliy staiiThou shalt not let the wicked fly breed. Thou shalt not kill thy neighbour by ignoring tire menace or by poisoning the air with rubbish. Thou shalt not keep thy windows closed day or night. Thou shalt covet all the air and sunlight thou canst obtain. Because of the love thou bearest thy children thou shalt provide clean homes for them. Thou shalt not steal tliy children's right to health and happiness PEELING A POTATO If you see a young girl you woulo. like to marry, manage somehow to see her peel potatoes. If she cuts the peelings very thick you will know she is extravagant; it: she leaves in the eyes she, is lazy; if she washes them in only one water she is dirty; if she uses much fat to boil them she is greasy; If she lets them burn she is careless. Leave such a girl; she would not make a man happy. But if you find a girl who knows how to take a potato, peel it, wash it. and boil it, marry her whether she be pretty or ugly, poor or rich; she will make you happy. An Arab’s philosophy.
