SUBURBAN SOCIAL LIFE

VARIED ENTERTAINMENTS The social requirements of people of Avondale and Glen Eden continue to be catered for on a lavish scale. At the first-mentioned suburb a “500” tournament has just concluded under the auspices of the fire brigade. Presentation of prizes won at the tournament will be made to the winners on August 9, when another tournament will be introduced. At the last evening of the series the winners were: Ladies, Mrs. Henderson 1, Mrs. Jones 2. Gents, Mr. Pink 1, Mr. Taylor 2. The Glen Eden Anglican Building Fund should benefit handsomely as the result of a “500” evening held recently in the Church Hall. There was a large attendance. If preparation counts for anything, the jumble sale now to be held in the building opposite Fearon Bros., Avondale, through the council taking over the G.O.C. garage, should be highly successful. The proceeds will go to strengthen the Avondale Catholic Church and Convent funds. Games and competitions were the chief factors in making the last social held under the auspices of the Oratia Young People’s Society one of the most successful to date. There was a good attendance. This evening an effort on behalf of the poor of Avondale, in the form of a “500” evening, is to be made by MisS Harris.
