WINTER ON RUAPEHU
INTENSE COLD FREEZES CRATER LAKE (Prom Our Own Correspondent.) OHAKUNE, To-day. The crater lake on the summit of Mount Ruapehu has been frozen over of late, except for a small vent in the centre, an unusual occurrence, as, despite the high altitude and surrounding snow r fields, the lake is usually warm, and occasionally boiling in places. It is not generally known that iceskating is at times possible in the North Island. At a lower level in the National Park is Lake Tama, where, in very cold weather, . the surface freezes, and ice 22 inches in thickness has been known. Lake Tama is at all times cold water, without any trace of thermal connections.
