CHILDREN SLAIN BY STORM
BABY FROZEN TO DEATH The two baby victims of a great storm were the subjects of inquests at West Bromwich and Fulham respectively. At Spon Lane, West Bromwich, it was said, five children were trapped by floods and drifting hail in a room 4ft. below the road level, their mother being out shopping. The room was waist-deep in water and drifts of h Hstones, and although passers-by broke the windows and rescued four of the children, the baby, aged 14 months, was found drowned, having been lifted bodily from its pram. All the children were covered with ice, some of the hailstones being as big as marbles. Recording a verdict of death from exposure and fright, the coroner said that the probability was that the child was frozen to death. The coroner’s officer said that the following day there was three and aha.lf feet of ice in the room. lis Smith, aged 19 months, who was found drowned in about two feet of water in a flooded basement in a house at Munster Road, was the subject of the Fuinam inquest. Dr. R. M. Bronte said the child doubtless fell and was possibly stunned and unable to call for help. Verdict: Accidental death.
