AWFUL WASTE

DUMPING OF WHISKY Three thousand gallons of pure whisky spirit, 75 over proof, representing a dutiable and salvage value of over £15,000, were dumped in the sea several miles off Aberdeen by Customs officers and Harbour Board officials. The spirit was contained in 60 steel casks each containing 50 gallons, but the revenue charge made it unprofitable to land it. The casks were picked up at various points of the northern, east and west coasts of Scotland by trawlers, and it is presumed they had formed part of the cargo of a vessel which, torpedoed and sunk during the war, had recently broken up, thereby releasing the casks from her holds. So strong was the spirit that artificial respiration had to be applied to a seaman who sampled it.
