New Racing Year

USHERED IN AT ELLERSLIE

Successful Hunt Fixture

THE new racing season for 1927-28 was ushered in in this province on Saturday by the Pakuranga Hunt fixture at Ellersile. The contests were keen throughout, with no dearth of runners, and altogether it was a promising start for the new year.

THE annual race meeting of the -*■ Pakuranga Hunt Club was held at Ellerslie on Saturday. The conditions were by no means favourable, rain showers in the morning and during the early part of the proceedings having an effect on the attendance. Nevertheless there was a good representation of the race-going public, in addition to more than a sprinkling of hunting enthusiasts from all parts of the province. The course was in a very heavy state, and cut up badly before the end of the programme was reached. Taken all round it was a most pleasant day’s sport, and this was attributed in no small measure to the organising abilities of the secretarial staff, with Mr. W. S, Spence a N t their head. T OTA LIS AT O R FIGURES For the day the totalisator put through £41,927 10s, compared with £51.398 10s twelve months ago. This represented a decrease on Saturday of £9,471, which would no doubt be considered satisfactory under the circumstances. The stewards were called together on a couple of occasions, and as the result of one of their inquiries, T. Chaplin, rider of Sea Comet in the Hunt Cup, was suspended for one month for interference with Hypothesis. H. Gilmer received concussion when Ramblin’ Kid fell at the first obstacle in the Hunters’ Hurdles. Considering the going there were remarkably few accidents. In the forenoon a two-year-old parade was held, sixteen youngsters lining up in two divisions, of nine and seven respectively. Notes on the running, together with details of concluding results follow: A “Thrilling ’ Race The opening event, the Greenmount Hunters’ Steeplechase, was contested by five horses, and three of these failed to complete the journey at the first attempt. Sea Comet was favourite with £643, against Wiltshire £599, Glenlight’s £469 and Nukutere’s £3BO. The quintette got oyer the hill all right, but at the stone wall at the foot Hauturu lost his rider, and Wiltshire also pecked at the second of the double, losing his jockey. Sea Comet had a small advantage here from Glenliglit and Nukutere, but once on the hill the second time Sea Comet drew away, and Glenliglit failed to rise at the first fence there. Nukutere made a great hurst coming down the hill, and he was in front of Sea Comet at the stone wall, coming on to score by half a dozen lengths. Glenlight was remounted and finished some time later to be placed third. Fair Abbey at Last There were more incidents in the Hunters’ Hurdles, two horsea falling and two others failing to complete the journey. The order of betting was Lady Acre £BO3, Just John £74G, Mangani £735, Ramblin’ Kid £477 and Fair Abbey £434. Over the first fence and past the post the first time Royal Bonus led from Royal Day, Mangani, Lady Acre, Fair Abbey, Master Noel, Town Hall, Simplicitas, Just John and Whakatoe, Ramblin' Kid falling at the first fence. There were some changes running to the. fence at the five furlongs, where Just John crashed, the order of the leaders being Mangani, Lady Acre, Royal Day and Fair Abbey in close order, followed by Simplicitas, Town Hall and Master Noel. Fair Abbey was half a length in front of Mangani Into the straight, their nearest attendants being Lady Acre. Royal Day, Simplicitas and Town Hall. Fair Abbey carried too many guns for Mangani in the run from the last obstacle and won by 3 lengths, with Town Hall twenty lengths further back. Next in order were Lady Acre, Roval Day, Simplicitas and Master Noel. Whakatoe and Royal Bonus pulled up. Festina Lente Scores The Sylvia Park Handicap saw all the acceptors go to the post, Acushla £777, being the tavourite, with money for Festina Lente £641, Captain Cobham £577, Red Comet £482 and Killute £397. A walk-in start saw Wyoming and Arch Queen hit the front first, this pair leading past the post from Fiery Lad. Killute, Acushla, Charitaine, Star Comet, Festina Lente and Michael. At the six furlongs Fiery Lad had charge from Wyoming, Acushla, Festina Lente, Arch Queen, Star Comet, Charitaine, Killute and Bright Dawn. As they crossed the top and came into the straight Wyoming and Acushla were on terms, Athenry, Bright Dawn, Festina Lente, Charitaine and Star Comet, with Captain Cobham next. In the last furlong Festina Lente came through on the rails to win by two lengths from Captain Cobham, with Athenry three lengths away. Then came Acushla, Killute, Wyoming, Bright Dawn, Star Comet and Blue Sky. Consistent Master Doon Delightment and Royal Present dropped out of the Jellicoe Handicap, and in a good pool Llandudno £1,440, Master Doon £1,263, Te Kara £1,200. and Queen Arch £613 were the best supported. After the field had gone a furlong Llandudno, Queen Emerald, Harbour View, Master Doon, Queen Arch. Thursby, Tinoiti, Te Kara, Desert Glow and Golden Krist was the order out of the straight. Queen Arch had run in behind Llandudno, Master Doon, Desert Glow, Queen Emerald and Te Kara following them past the six furlongs. Llandudno was stiff in front at the home turn, with Queen Arch. Te Kara, Master Doon, Thursby, Tinoiti and Queen Emerald next. At the distance Llandudno and Queen Arch were on terms, and then Master Doon appeared on the scene, - the last-named finishing too strongly for Queen Arch, whom ho beat by a neck, with Llandudno a length and a-half away third. Te Kara was fourth, and next in order were Tinoiti, Queen Emerald, Thursby, Harbour View, Desert Glow and Golden Krist. The last-named began slowly and ran in the rear the whole way. Pendavies' Hunt Cup Seven saddled up for the Pakuranga Hunt Cup, most money being on hand for Pendavies £1,014, Hypothesis £967, Rafferty £964 and Syndicate £6lB. Pendavies at once went to the front, leading over the water jump from Stonewall Arsene Lupin, Hypothesis, Rafferty. Syndicate and Sea Comet. This order was almost maintained for the next round, the seven horses being in close attendance. Going to the fence at the seven furlongs Pendavies was clear of Syndicate and Arsene Lupin, with Hypothesis, Rafferty and Stonewall, Rafferty losing his rider at the six furlongs. At this stage Sea Comet was rushed through and taking the hill he and Pendavies cleared out from the field, at the fence on the top a dozen lengths separating the pair from Syndicate and Hypothesis. Poor jumping let Pendavies assume command once more, and he was not troubled to go on and win by half a dozen lengths from Hypothesis, Sea Comet a neck away third. Syndicate and Stonewall were next at intervals. Arsene Lupin pulled up when well in the rear. An inquiry was held concerning the incident which occurred in the finishing of Sea Comet and Hypothesis, as a result of which T. Chaplin, the rider of Sea Comet was suspended for one month for careless riding. Takarunga All the Way Of 17 starters in the Auckland Handicap the favourites were War Officer £1,209. Captain Cobham £1.038, Acushla £835 and Takarunga £652. Josie Melville, Takarunga, Restaurant, Valentino and Acushla was the order when they settled down. Passing the half-mile Takarunga and Rarakau were in the van, and they piloted the field into the straight, being followed by War Officer, Culgie, Acushla. Josie Melville, Slump and Te Tahi. At the bottom of the straight War Officer and Takarunga were just on terms, but the latter did better from this out to win by three parts of a lengths from the favourite, with Captain Cobham two and a-half lengths away third. Next came Rarakau, Restaurant, Slump, Te Tahi, Red Comet and Acushla. Quinvardia Nicely Odin (£795) and Pukerimu (£673), carried most moxrey in the Ladies’ Brace-

let. Maslioor led out from the tapes, attended in close order by Quinvardia, [ Ladv Faye, Ramblin’ Kid. Prince Lupin ! and'Edifice. On the bend Edifice came , down. Maslioor maintained his position ; round the back and into the straight | from Pukerimu, Clockwork. Quinvardia. j Levenside and Prince Lupin. At the . distance Quinvardia came through and ; went on to win by two lengths from i Pukerimu, with Levenside third, a good length away. Next were Maslioor, Odin j and Prince Lupin. The Final Event The Dunedin Handicap atti'acted 11 runners, and in a good betting race Town Guard £1,591, Delightment £1,552 and King Lu £1,394, carried most of the investments. At the start Whaka King began very quickly, but Finelli was soon in the van, being pursued by Delightment, Whaka King. King Emerald, Day Guard, Town Guard and Automne, the field stringing out. Passing the half-mile Finelli got a break on, being six lengths out from Delightment and Whaka King, but in the furlong and a-half she stopped to a walk, leaving Delightment in the van at the home turn, followed by Whaka King, Finelli, Town Guard, King Emerald, Desert Knight and Automne. Once straightened up Delightment made no race of it, winning very easily by four lengths from King Lu, who came from a long way back with a great rattle, and beat Automne by a neck for second. Town Guard was fourth, and King Emerald, Whaka King, Tinokoa and Day Guard next to cross the line. Concluding results are:— JELLICOE HANDICAP Of £SOO. 11 miles. 2 MASTER DOON (D. P.
