A WAY OUT BEDSIDE COUNCIL MEETING Providing satisfactory progress is made by Mr. W. H. Manning, who is at present a patient at the Auckland Hospital, a way out of the difficulty at present confronting the remnants of the Avondale Borough Council should be found either on Monday or Tuesday. Left without a quorum as a result of the resignation of the Mayor, Mr. H. Tiarks, and Councillors Pendlebury, A. J. Edmiston and J. V. Reisterer, at a time when two other councillors, Messrs. W. IT. Manning and J. E. Ellis, were absent, the council has since been in a quandary as to its legal position in regard to the transaction of necessary business pending amalgamation with the city being effected. Interviewed by a SUN representative, Mr. H. Potter, one of the councillors who elected to remain in office, stated that notices hod been sent out calling a meeting of the council to be held cither on Monday or Tuesday. Providing Mr. Manning’s condition permits the meeting will be held at his bedside, where a Deputy-Mayor will be elected and a Works Committee appointed.
The Works Comimttee will carry out urgent works and its decision will be confirmed in the presence of Cr. Manning.
In regard to the signing and sealing of the amalgamation petition, Mr. Potter said that it would be completed and forwarded to the Minister of Internal Affairs for his sanction. Legal advice had been obtained in regard to the council’s position as a result of which the decision to hold a meeting at Cr. Manning’s bedside had been arrived at. The remaining members of the council are Messrs. H. Potter, J. B. Clarke, P. Wright, J. W. Ivealy and J. E. Ellis, the latter being at present in Fiji.
