Captain Kingsford Smith, Lieutenant Uim and Lieutenant Anderson, while refusing to he interviewed, declared that it was their plan to start for Sydney in the latter part of September. They said a plane had been obtained, and its purchase practically completed.—A. and N.Z. CAPTAIN GILES OVERDUE FEARS FOR HIS SAFETY CHICAGO, Thursday. Air mail officials in Chicago express the fear that Captain F. A. Giles, the Australian aviator, who was following the air mail plane from Detroit to this city, en route to California, was forced down somewhere between Sturgis, Michigan, and Chicago. The mail plane has arrived, but nothing has been heard from Captain Giles. The pilot of the mail plane says he last saw the Australian in the vicinity of Sturgis.—A. and N.Z. ANTARCTIC FLIGHT AID FOR BYRD’S VENTURE GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY GIFT By Cable.—Press Association.-—Copyright WASHINGTON, Thursday. The National Geographic Society announces that it will contribute £5,000 toward Commander Richard Byrd’s Antarctic expedition for the purchase of a scientific equipment. It is hoped the expedition will obtain important data bearing on weather forecasting.—A. and. N.Z.
