MANAWATU NOTES
HORSES FOR MARTON CANDIDATES FOR ’CHASING HONOURS Yesterday morning training operations were carried out without interruption, although the tracks were on the heavy side, and little of a fast nature was attempted. A team of good strength promises to represent local stables at Marton, but G. New will have an overwhelming advantage from a numerical point of view, for eight members of his string figure in the nominations. L. Knapp has taken in hand the aged gelding Sir Fataciful (Rokeby—Lady Wayward), who has been an absentee from the active ranks for some time past. The season before last Sir Fanciful enjoyed a win, two seconds and a third in four successive starts, but he went wrong and disappeared frorfi the scene. The one success was in the Spring Hurdles at the November meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club, when he carried 10.10 home ahead of En Route and Bonecto. The old jumper has been hunted in the meantime and looks in very fair order. TWO ’CHASERS
Little River (N. Stratton) was sent a round on the grass proper at a solid pace, the Martian gelding striding out most attractively. He will be at Marton, when he will run in the Hack Steeples, while another representative in Lady Comet will be found in the Ladies’ Bracelet. The latter is only a handful, but can muster a fair turn of speed, while she jumps well and is consequently more at home over the big fences. Redbank, an aged gelding by All RedWillowbank, purchased at Hunterville on behalf of Mr. George Brown, is steadily improving in,\Condition, and on looks promises to be a worthy successor to Comedy Prince, whom that owner disposed of during the course of the past Hawke’s Bay meeting. Although aged, Redbank has never been tried. Crown Area is missing from the nominations for Marton, but the big raking gelding will keep. Yesterday he was sent a round on the plough, and his raking stride made him appear to be going very easily. Royal Land, presumably, is to carry the honours for that stable in the open sprint. While in at the minimum the company in the Railway Handicap promises to be a bit rich for the Acre representative. G. New claims two entries in Duke Abbey and Wanderlust in the Electric Hack Handicap, while Lady Limond and Miss Patt will represent Foxton, and Lady Cynthia Pending—a promises quartette. Duke Abbey proved his worth ,at Trentham, even if beaten by his stablemate, Royal Land, on the final day. He has developed into a fine horse, capable of still better things in the future. TO MEET AT MARTON
Maidos, who has been allotted 9.7 in the Hunt Cup Steeplechase at Marton, was sent twice over the steeplechase fences by Parker, and he fulfilled his task cleanly and well, although a short rein did not give him quite enough head, and in consequence he jumped shorter than usual. Maidos met and defeated Birkenose at the Hunt Club’s point-to-point at Te Matai, and the pair will meet at Marton. where Birkenose will be asked to accord ms victor of that earlier occasion 171 b. The distance might, however, beat the lighter scale candidate. The recent purchase of Mr. E. Irevor, Keddar, was sent over four furlongs in company with Chrissarto, who figures in the field in the Trial I late at Marton. Keddar had the measure of his .companion and drew out m the run home. The Arrowf? 11111 gelding, as a two-year-old, showed a good turn of pace, but did not appear to stay too well, and he might be improving with age. He is the sole representative Mr. Trevor has ? . hi ? l colours at the present time, Catcall and Santonio having
been both turned out. Whether they will be taken up again is uncertain. BACK FROM AUSTRALIA Imperial Spark, who is the other member of P. Nash’s team, was sent over a mile on the grass with a light boy up. Since his return from Australia, the Imperial 11. representative has shown steady improvement in conr dition, and the manner in which he hit out in his work yesterday morning indicates that he should be fit and well when asked the question. Novar (Stratton) and Mister Gamp (Yelverton) were sent along over a six-furlong spin. Racing along the back the pair kept on terms, but with heads turned for home Novar drew away. Mister Gamp has been allotted 8.13 in the Tutaenui Hack Handicap at Marton, and is being asked to accord weight to all the field save MerleViewed from that angle he does not appear to have been given any rope by the weight-adjuster, although if he did his best the task might well prove within his powers. Novar, who is carrying a little condition at present, will not make an appearance till Wanganui. SCHOOL OVER HURDLES Bismoor (N. Stratton) and Wilderness (C. Robinson) were sent over the hurdles on the inner grass the reverse way. Bismoor, who was on the outer, did not appreciate the changed order of things, and promptly ran off at his -first two fences. Entering the back his rider brought him inside his companion, t and he took a hurdle, although a bump nearly brought about the undoing of Wilderness. At the final fence Bismoor was again on the outside, but jumped faultlessly and did not display any tendency to run off. This full brother to Banjuke is built on much more solid lines than his relative, and promises to make a name for himself. Wilderness shows distinct aptitude for the game, but the Signor gelding is not yet proficient enough for racing. Blimp (N. Stratton), Le Champ (Broughton), Fee Simple (Parker), Starlight (Adams) and Teremoana were given barrier practice a t the seven-furlong post, thus giving the youngsters a straight run on to the course proper. Four of the riders had the colours up, and the youngsters, on the whole, behaved well at the barrier. Blimp, Fee Simple, Le Champ and Shining Star all figure in the Trial Plate at Marton, in which Hannibal Plane and Chrissarto are also Awapuni representatives. Hannibal is a splendid type of youngster, although the Catmint-Nordica represenative shows rather much daylight underneath at present. BUOYANT SOLD His is negotiating the sale of the Solferino gelding, Buoyant, who has proved a very useful sort since ‘the Awapuni mentor purchased him from the Wellington owner, Mr. E. L. Riddiford, close on £I,OOO having come his way in stake money during the past season, and he will depart in the near future for his new home on the West Coast. The purchase price is stated to show a profit on the original outlay. The Awapuni mentor will now centre his attention on the promising Bisogne youngster, Bisora, who, despite being a December foal, can already muster up a good turn of speed, while he has another youngster by Chief Ruler to take in hand later. NOT FOR ELLERSLIE Del Sarto, who was to have been candidate for honours at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting, did not make the trip, having developed a tenderness in the off foreleg. The SartoWaihopai gelding had been displaying marked improvement in his jumping abilities, and his defection is all the more to be regretted. Merry Damon, another member of R. E. Hatch’s string, made his first appearance at the tracks yesterday morning since his return from Riccarton. Although the Southern trip was carried through, the Polydamon gelding proved disappointing, and he did not start on. the final day. He has not been entered for Marton, so it is evident that he is to be given a little time to find his lost form. Mr. R. A. McKenzie’s two candidates for honours in Australia, Piuthair and Clarinda, passed through Palmerston North yesterday afternoon en route for Wellington and Sydney. Overtures had been made by the Palmerston North sportsman to secure the services of the local lightweight, T. Green, but that horseman has elected to remain in the Dominion for the spring meetings.
