CRYSTAL WATERS
DUE IN CITY MAINS FILTER PLANTS WORKING The city is getting nearer to the time when the crystal-clear waters, promised under the new filtration scheme, will be procurable merely by turning the household tap. THE second filtration plant, at Titi- ■*- rangi, was brought into action today, and clear waters should come through the pipes as soon as the water at present in the reservoirs and mains, is used up. The work of the filtration plants has previously been described in THE SUN. The water is let into the tanks above the filters, which are comprised of grades of sand and shingle, the sand coming from Ngaruawahia. This bed retains all the foreign matter, and at regular periods is cleaned by air and water pressure from below, the residue, which is of an objectionable appearance, flowing to waste. The purified water is treated chemically as required to counteract acidity. The plant has a capacity of 5,000,000 gallons a day, but it is not required to work at maximum capacity at present.
