FAMOUS LOVE TOKEN
QUEEN ELIZABETH’S MEMENTO The famous Essex King—given as a pledge by Queen Elizabeth to the Earl of Essex as a surety for his pardon—is to be preserved for the nation. It was sold by auction at Christie’s rec ntly for 520 guineas, the purchaser being Mr. Ernest Makower, of Holmwood, Binfield, Oxfordshire. Mr. Makower has made several gifts to public institutions, including the shirt worn by Charles I at his execution. which he presented to the London Museum. Asked what institution would receive his latest gift, he said, ‘’l have not yet decided, but this I can say. The nation will have a treasure which should not be allowed to leave the country.” The ring is of gold, and bears Queen Elizabeth’s portrait, head-dress and the familiar ruff. It was the work of an Italian, who settled in this country in the 16th century.”
