Hid in His Wife’s Cabin

Stowaway’s Comfortable Berth Stowaways have been discovered in queer corners of ships, but Thomas Edwin Hill, a British subject, residing in Canada, lias established something of a record. Secreting himself in the cabin occupied by his wife as a passenger, he made the voyage from New York to Liverpool on the liner Franconia. When he was charged at Liverpool Police Court, it was said that after his wife and son embarked at New York as third-class passengers, Hill came aboard and hid himself in his wife’s cabin. Later, Avlien the ship was at sea, he came on deck and mingled with the passengers. Finding it difficult to get ashore with the other passengers wlien the liner arrived at Liverpool, he remained on board. When the vessel was going into dock he was found by the assistant ship’s inspector on the fo’es’le head. It was said that his wife helped him to get what food he required. A detective said Hill came to this country because his mojther was ill in Manchester and not expected to live. His wife was going to nurse her. Hill told the stipendiary that he had not enough money for his passage. When he went on the ship he was drunk. Tie only ate from the company’s table for a day or so. He used to eat bits that were left over, he added. “I never remember a case like this in all my experience,” said the stipendiary in remanding Hill one day for further inquiries.
