WANGANUI NOTES

VALUABLE YOUNGSTERS YESTERDAY’S TRACK WORK

(Special to TIIE SUH.) WANGANUI, Thursday. The Wanganui tracks are in wonderfully good condition, considering the recent heavy rain and liberal topdressing, and should be in splendid order for the spring meeting. Many visiting horses will be trained here for the Marton and Wanganui spring meetings. Captain J. Gage Williams arrived from Trentliam on Tuesday afternoon with Grand Knight, Mount Marta, Mandarine, Wild Pigeon, Shot Silk, Wet Paint and Stag Hunter. J. Lowe

arrived this afternoon with four—ch c Salt Petrel, by Saltash—Mother Carey: blk c Jet Black, by Magpie— Daffodil Queen; ch f Flying Binge, by Chief Ruler—Acushla; and br g Catkin, by Catmint. The first two are Australian-bred and cost 1,000 guineas and 1,400 guineas respectively. THE GALLOPS The weather was fine for training operations this morning, fast work being done on No. 1 track. Lysander (W. Rayne.r) and Kiosk (Smith) ran four furlongs, the first furlong in 12 1-5, the quarter in 25, and the full distance in 51 3-5, with Lysander a neck in front going nicely. Kiosk did not make much noise, so apparently the operation was successful. Mount Marta accompanied Alloway over six furlongs, being quickest to get going, but Alloway reached him at the end of the first three-quarters and was a length to the good. The time was 1.21 4-5. 'Wild Pigeon and Mandarine were ; slipped over four furlongs, which occupied a tick over 53sec, Wild Pigeon I pleasing most. i Grand Knight, after doing pace

work, was sent over four furlongs in 53. He looks in great order. Damaris, Paleta, Star Area, Thaw, Mask and Civility were exercised. Shot Silk spurted twice up the straight, shaping pleasingly. He looks like being a top-notcher.
