IN THE MARKET PLACE
BIG ORANGE SHIPMENT CHEAPER EGGS Fruit, with the cold snap experienced to-day, met a slightly weaker market in the city marts though prices were practically unchanged. Bananas, in short supply, make firmer prices. Vegetables are well supplied. Table poultry, in shorter supply, is making better money. Eggs are cheaper. Considering the time of the year there is a steady demand for most varieties of fruit. The Waipahi, due next week, brings a shipment of approximately 21,000 cases of Cook Island oranges.. This should see local prices ease slightly. A further shipment is due in Wellington about a week later. The mid-month boat from the Fiji Group is due about Thursday with a small shipment of bananas. Local lemons continue in poor demand. A fresh shipment of citrus fruit, via Sydney, came to hand during the week and met a firm market. Vegetables are well supplied and meet with a ready sale at low values. In the poultry section ducks are offering in greater numbers and meeting slightly easier values. Prime cocks and hens are in very short supply and make firmer prices.
