OPOTIKI TRADE

NEW MOTOR SHIP ON MAIDEN TRIP (From Our Own Correspondent.) OPOTIKI, To-day. The Northern Steamship Company’s new motor-ship Hauturu arrived in Opotiki yesterday morning on her maiden trip, which was done in record time. The vessel was in the charge of Captain Gash, with C. Fagan as chief engineer. The vessel has a capacity of about 400 tons, but is capable of carrying between 600 and 700 tons of general cargo. Owing to the greatly increased trade between Auckland and Opotiki, the Hauturu fills a long-felt want, and the arrival of the vessel caused a great deal of interest.

The Hauturu behaved in a most satisfactory manner during her trip. She is driven by crude oil engines of 300 h.p., and averaged a speed of 9A knots.
