Nothing to Say on Loan Poll
COUNCILLORS SILENT <‘rpHERE won't be any foolishX ness like the resignations of councillors," was about the most informative expression from any of the City Councillors yesterday concerning the adverse vote on the tramway £500,000 loan poll. The remark was Te by a member of the Tramways Committee. are not in Avondale," inter-
ject 1 ' ur * The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, on behalf of the council, briefly stated that the full position had been placed before the ra' -payers, and they must now accept the responsibility for the modifications that must result. POINT CHEVALIER’S POSITION One of the chief concerns of councillors is their inability to see a clear way out of the difficulties covering the Point Chevalier requirements. It ic possioh? that the constitution of the suburb and district into a special rating area will be considered, with a viev :> the district backing its own loan. The Tramways Committee will forth with consider the position, especially in relation to the fares to be charged on buses serving the proposed extension routes, which it was proposed to jti on tramway fares temporarily. No indication was obtainable this morning as to whether the loan proposals would be submitted in another or modified form. The impression is that no immediate move will be made in this direction, and that the Tramways Committee will continue with its original idea of commencing an investigation of the administration, with a view to discovering leakages. MEN DISMISSED Funds having been depleted, the reduction of the staff employed on outside maintenance was actually commenced during the last fortnight, during which sixtv-nine men left the service. A-further thirty-nine men were given a week’s j.otice last Monday, so that the end of this week will have seen the staff reduced by 108. It was intended to re-employ men if the new v-orks had been authorised.
