ROTORUA BOROUGH COUNCIL

THE ABATTOIR AREA A lengthy meeting of the Rotorua Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening, the Mayor, Mr. T. McDowell, presiding. Mr. W. L. Richards presented a petition signed by a majority of the business people of Arawa Street, urging the installation of kerbside pumps in that thoroughfare. The petition stated that if permission were granted and the pumps installed, it would be construed as a sign of progress and prove of signal advantage to business. The petitioners were also of opinion that no traffic congestion would result. The council, after discussion, decided that as Arawa Street was situate within the proscribed area, permission could not be granted. The council had drawn the attention of the Tourist Department to the deplorable state of the footpaths in the reserve adjoining the golf links, and in the reserve immediately adjacent the western side of the town. Both reserves contained extraordinary thermal attractions which should be rendered accessible and safe to tourists. Cr. Hill, on behalf of the Tourist Department, said the paths would receive immediate attention. When the county council was pressed for a fuller statement regarding its non-compliance with the suggestion of the borough council that the abattoir area be extended into the county, the reply that came to hand was cogent and to the point.
