The Punch That Settled Sharkey
“0.K.” SAYS MULDOON A SOLAR PLEXUS BLOW William Muldoon, chairman of the Boxing Commission, has attempted to squelch Jack Sharkey’s claim to a foul. “I was in a position at the ringside which commanded a perfect view of the right-hand finishing punch in the seventh round,” he said. “It was a solar plexus blow—that is what put Sharkey down. A left hook immediately afterward did little more than graze Sharkey’s jaw. The final smash to the body was no more a foul than the blow which Bob Fitzsimmons emPloved to knock out Jim Corbett. This tint* Dempsey hit Sharkey exactly in the solar plexus. That blow paralysed Sharkey’s legs. “When Sharkey was down lie was not unconscious, for he talked with the referee when the latter bent over Mm, counting him out. Sharkey is a smart fighter and courageous, but . er *P e smash that Dempsey gave J, he stomach his 'ess would not hold him uji. That's all."
