Town Hall and Councillors Blown Up By Dishonest Clerk

DESTRUCTION OF EVIDENCE By Cable. — P?'ess Association. — Copyright. Reed. 9.5 a.m. CAPETOWN, Wednesday. ONE of the most sensational trials in the history of South Africa was concluded when a man named Deleeuw, town clerk of a small Orange Free State town, was sentenced to death for the murder of three members of the town council. The case of the Crown was that Deleeuw had prepared an infernal machine, by which he blew up the town hall and three councillors, in order to destroy all evidence of the defalcations of municipal moneys. The evidence showed that Deleeuw had been warned that if the books were not in order within a week he would be dismissed. He then made inquiries regarding the power of dynamite and petrol used together.—A. and N.Z.
